Dr. Mary H. Derbish

PhD, MSW

You may not be there yet, but you are one step closer than you were yesterday.

Whether you’re reaching out on behalf of your child, yourself, or your family, it’s never easy to ask for help. So, give yourself credit for taking this first step. My treatment philosophy focuses first and foremost on building a safe, trusting therapeutic relationship. I am not here to fix you. I am here to walk beside you on your journey toward healing, growth, and connection.

I specialize in working with kids and teens experiencing a variety of challenges including: anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, lack of confidence, eating disorders, difficult friendships and relationships, and trouble adjusting after divorce or other life changes. I am also passionate about empowering women through various stages of life: transitioning to college, identity development, becoming a mom, relationship conflict, divorce, and career challenges. I also offer parenting sessions and couples or family therapy for a variety of issues.

My approach incorporates holistic techniques such as art therapy, narrative therapy, mindfulness, and yoga with traditional talk and behavioral therapies to help people recognize and build on their own strengths, develop a toolbox of skills they can use during difficult times, and facilitate growth. Some of these approaches focus on managing emotions, replacing harmful behaviors, and staying calm during crisis. Some focus on challenging unhelpful thinking processes and reframing negative thoughts. Some focus on recognizing relationship patterns and improving conflict resolution. And some are used to explore values and identity within the larger landscape of your family and culture.

I view treatment planning as a collaboration, not a prescription. I am open and willing to address any concerns you have, and work with you to make the best counseling decision for you and your family. I offer free phone consultations, so don’t hesitate to reach out. I look forward to getting to know you.
